orthodontics

I like to move it, move it!

When the upper and lower jaws grow unevenly, sometimes orthognathic surgery is indicated. This most often manifests with bite issues, such as severe overbites, underbites, or open bites and the associated facial profile appearances. It is also helpful in correcting asymmetric jaw growth as well as reducing sleep apnea in severe cases. Orthognathic surgery aligns the jaws to the ideal relationship, idealizing the bite and overall facial esthetics.

Orthodontics are critical both before and after surgery to ensure the best result possible. Both braces and clear aligners can be used when planning for Orthognathic surgery.

If you are an adult patient with an improper bite or esthetic concerns, you may be a candidate for surgical orthodontic treatment. Most children finish growing their jaws by age 16 or 18. Jaw surgery cannot take place until all growth is complete. However, the planning can often begin years before, and it is important to see an orthodontist to assess the need for treatment at a young age (as early as seven!). The pre-surgical tooth movement, however, typically begins one to two years before the surgery.
