The Reason for Retainers in New Rochelle

What Are Orthodontic Retainers and Why Are They Necessary?

A retainer is a custom orthodontic appliance that holds teeth in their corrected positions after braces or clear aligner treatment. Your teeth can continue to shift after active treatment, which is why the retention phase is so important.

Retainers can be removable, which allows you to take them out for meals and cleaning, or fixed, which means they remain attached behind the teeth. Chinitz Orthodontics uses a digital scan to capture the shape of your smile and guide your retainer plan. Children, teens, and adults may need retainers after treatment, when an older appliance no longer fits, or when a retainer is lost or damaged.

Types of Retainers at Chinitz Orthodontics

We offer several retainer options so that the right retainer for you can be matched to your smile, treatment history, and daily routine. Available choices include Hawley, Essix, Vivera, and bonded retainers. We also make our own custom 3D-printed retainers in-house, which means same-day service is possible when a new or replacement appliance is needed.

Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers are an acrylic and wire retainer considered a “classic choice” for retention. They can be taken out for eating and cleaning, then stored safely in their case. Each retainer is custom-made and you can choose your retainer’s color!

Essix Retainers

Essix retainers are clear, removable appliances designed to fit closely over the teeth. Their low-profile appearance can make them an appealing choice for patients who want discreet, everyday retention. Chinitz Orthodontics uses a digital scan to support a precise fit, then provides care and wear instructions tailored to your smile.

Vivera Retainers

Vivera retainers are another clear removable option offered by Chinitz Orthodontics. They’re made by the same company that makes Invisalign clear aligners, so they’re just as durable and discreet.

Bonded Retainers

Bonded retainers are thin wires fixed behind the teeth, so patients do not remove them. They provide continuous support and may be recommended for areas that need steady retention, including the lower front teeth. Dr. Chinitz will check whether a bonded retainer suits your smile and will explain cleaning and follow-up needs before placement.

Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontic Retainers

Wear time depends on your appliance, treatment history, and current alignment. Dr. Chinitz may recommend full-time wear at first and nighttime wear later, but your instructions will be personalized. Continue wearing your retainer exactly as directed, and ask the team before making any change to your schedule.

Absolutely! Chinitz Orthodontics provides retainers to non-patients as well as current patients in New Rochelle. Dr. Chinitz will evaluate your alignment, bite, treatment history, and any existing appliance before recommending a Hawley, Essix, Vivera, bonded, or in-house 3D-printed retainer for your needs.

Call Chinitz Orthodontics promptly rather than waiting if your retainer isn’t usable. Your teeth can move when retention is interrupted, so our team will advise you on the next step. In-house 3D printing may allow a same-day replacement when appropriate, although availability depends on your evaluation and appointment circumstances.

Clean your removable retainer gently with a toothbrush and mild soap or a retainer-cleaning solution recommended by our office. Store it in its case whenever it is not in your mouth. A consistent cleaning and storage routine helps protect the appliance from buildup, contamination, loss, and accidental damage.

A retainer holds teeth in place; it is not always designed to move teeth back after noticeable shifting. Dr. Chinitz can assess how much movement has occurred. Depending on the findings, he may recommend a new retainer, limited clear aligner treatment, braces, or another personalized step before retention.
